BYU

The following information is for parents who wish their students to take independent study courses from BYU while in attendance at Darrington Academy.

Students who have completed the requirements for high school graduation may enroll in independent study courses from BYU. These courses are easily transferred to most colleges and universities around the country. Courses need not be completed at Darrington Academy. The student may take up to One year to complete the course and BYU has testing centers all around the country so even after leaving the school the student can complete the course/courses started at Darrington Academy.

Students should be enrolled in courses which are considered general elective (GE) courses as noted in the “NOTES” section of the course catalog. These courses are most easily transferred and count toward the general electives all colleges require in their first and second year students. I recommend that students stick to the major areas of study
namely, English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. Students who have taken the English and math courses have had great success in the past and I highly recommend these courses as first time courses. It is the parent and student’s responsibility to ensure that all of the course requirements may be fulfilled within the constraints of the facility rules. Rules will not be changed to accommodate a student’s needs for a college course so make sure that the work can be done while here or on a home pass. Students will not be allowed access to the internet for any reason so please sign them up for the pencil and paper version of the course.

Students interested in college courses will be provided a course catalog here at the school by their family rep. Parents can access an online version of the catalog at www.elearn.byu.edu this is also where you will be able to register your student for the desired courses. Once the student is registered for the course please remember to
purchase the necessary books from the bookstore and have them sent to your student at the facility care of Ms. Cook who will make sure that they receive them as soon as possible. You will need the following information in registering your student.

• Student’s SS#
• High School Code 110-394
• Address: Darrington Academy, 1580 Appalachian Hwy, Blue Ridge GA, 30513
• Course numbers from catalog
